Smithing Guide

Your route from first steps to mastery.

Gathering & production · Both worlds

Master Smithing

Smithing has two stages: smelt ore at a furnace, then work bars with a hammer at an anvil. Each stage has its own level requirements and XP.

World 1: 50× normal XP. World 2: 100× normal XP. Reference values below show base XP and the normal world-scaled amount, before any activity-specific modifiers.

Before you begin

  • Ores and the correct coal quantity
  • Hammer and bars for anvil work
  • A furnace or anvil with a manageable bank route

Your training route

From first steps to mastery

These level bands are recommendations, not extra unlock requirements. Where an option unlocks partway through a band, keep using the earlier method until you reach it.

  1. Levels1–15

    Bronze bars and bronze items

Smelt one copper plus one tin per bronze bar. Use a hammer on an anvil to turn bars into unlocked equipment, keeping supplies for early combat.

  2. Levels15–30

    Iron, with silver at 20

Iron smelting can fail without the appropriate aid. Silver is another option if you have mined it and want jewellery supplies.

  3. Levels30–50

Steel bars and unlocked steel equipment

Each steel bar needs one iron ore and two coal. Gold unlocks at 40; it can support Crafting and has different XP efficiency with relevant equipment.

  4. Levels50–70

Mithril supplies or cheaper bar work

Mithril smelting requires one mithril ore and four coal. Anvil recipes unlock individually, so do not assume all mithril equipment is available immediately.

  5. Levels70–85

    Adamant bars and unlocked equipment

Adamant bars require one ore and six coal. Compare the cost per XP against continuing steel or mithril work.

  6. Levels85–99

Runite smelting and high-level anvil recipes

Runite bars need one ore and eight coal. Rune equipment unlocks through the remaining levels; retain cheaper methods when runite supplies are scarce.

Field notes

  • The reference table shows smelting XP, not anvil XP.
  • Check how many bars an anvil recipe consumes before starting a large batch.
  • Superheat Item can combine Magic and Smithing, but still needs the correct ores and Smithing level.
