Ranged Guide

Your route from first steps to mastery.

Combat · Both worlds

Master Ranged

Ranged training relies on ammunition, accuracy and choosing the right attack style. It is useful for Slayer, safe-distance combat and bosses that are awkward to fight with melee.

World 1: 50× normal XP. World 2: 100× normal XP. Reference values below show base XP and the normal world-scaled amount, before any activity-specific modifiers.

Before you begin

  • A bow and compatible arrows, or crossbow and bolts
  • Ranged armour you can equip
  • Food and spare ammunition; use only what you can afford to replace

Your training route

From first steps to mastery

These level bands are recommendations, not extra unlock requirements. Where an option unlocks partway through a band, keep using the earlier method until you reach it.

  1. Levels1–20

    Shortbows against low-level creatures

Start on chickens, cows or goblins. Equip ammunition explicitly and check your attack-style panel. Bank feathers for Fletching and collect ammunition when practical.

  2. Levels20–40

Upgrade bows and train on hill giants

Use distance and obstacles where the terrain permits. Safe positioning is useful, but check that your target can actually be attacked from your tile.

  3. Levels40–61

    Slayer tasks with suitable bows

Use better ranged armour and keep a steady ammunition supply. Choose accessible tasks with manageable defence rather than firing expensive ammunition at poor targets.

  4. Levels61–80

    Crossbow or higher-tier bow training

Use the weapon whose cost and accuracy suit the task. A rune crossbow is a useful progression option once its requirements are met.

  5. Levels80–99

    Sustained Slayer and ranged-friendly bosses

Keep low downtime for training. Boss encounters provide a loot-focused alternative; understand their mechanics before risking expensive gear.

Field notes

  • Longrange can train Defence as well as Ranged; inspect your chosen style if you are keeping Defence low.
  • Ammunition compatibility matters: a bow cannot fire every arrow tier.
  • Use the item archive to compare equipment and the monster archive to plan drops.

Equipment to consider

These are progression examples, not mandatory purchases. Match your attack style to the skill you are training, and check the item page before committing to an upgrade.
