Fishing Guide

Your route from first steps to mastery.

Gathering & production · Both worlds

Master Fishing

Catch food for Cooking and combat, or focus on frequent lower-tier catches for steady training. Your tool and bait must match the fishing spot’s option.

World 1: 50× normal XP. World 2: 100× normal XP. Reference values below show base XP and the normal world-scaled amount, before any activity-specific modifiers.

Before you begin

  • Small net or crayfish cage for a fresh start
  • Fly fishing rod and feathers for trout and salmon
  • Lobster pot or harpoon for the matching sea-fishing options

Your training route

From first steps to mastery

These level bands are recommendations, not extra unlock requirements. Where an option unlocks partway through a band, keep using the earlier method until you reach it.

  1. Levels1–20

Crayfish, shrimps and early bait fishing

Start near Lumbridge or a coastal net spot. Sardines unlock at 5 and herring at 10 with the appropriate rod and bait.

  2. Levels20–40

    Fly fish trout and salmon

Bring a fly fishing rod and feathers to river spots such as Lumbridge or Barbarian Village. Salmon joins the catch pool at 30.

  3. Levels40–62

Continue fly fishing or gather lobsters

Lobsters need a pot at 40. Tuna and swordfish are harpoon alternatives; swordfish unlock at 50. Compare banking time with frequent river catches.

  4. Levels62–76

Monkfish after Swan Song, or continue accessible fish

Monkfish provide useful food and 120 base Fishing XP. If you have not unlocked the colony, keep training with available methods.

  5. Levels76–99

Sharks for food; faster catches for training

Sharks unlock at 76, but are slow to catch. Trout and salmon remain valid for steady training, while sharks support high-level combat supplies.

Field notes

  • Sea turtles and manta rays are associated with Fishing Trawler rewards; do not look for a normal harpoon spot for them.
  • Barbarian fishing has additional training and Strength/Agility requirements. The Fishing level alone is not sufficient.
  • Cook your catch for a second skill, or bank it for later instead of buying all your food.
