Mining Guide

Your route from first steps to mastery.

Gathering & production · Both worlds

Master Mining

Mining produces ores for Smithing and precious materials for Crafting. Frequent successful rocks often beat long waits for a higher-tier ore.

World 1: 50× normal XP. World 2: 100× normal XP. Reference values below show base XP and the normal world-scaled amount, before any activity-specific modifiers.

Before you begin

  • A pickaxe you can use at your Mining level
  • Bank space for ore and coal
  • Food and protection if visiting dangerous mines

Your training route

From first steps to mastery

These level bands are recommendations, not extra unlock requirements. Where an option unlocks partway through a band, keep using the earlier method until you reach it.

  1. Levels1–15

    Copper and tin

Use accessible starter mines near Lumbridge or Varrock. Bank both ores together if you want to smelt bronze for Smithing.

  2. Levels15–30

    Iron rocks

Iron provides 35 base XP and a practical sustained-training route. Mine a cluster rather than spending most of each trip walking between rocks.

  3. Levels30–55

Iron for training or coal for supplies

Coal unlocks at 30 and supports steel and better bars. Iron can remain more convenient when you want frequent mining actions.

  4. Levels55–70

Mithril or continued iron and coal

Mithril unlocks at 55. Banking useful supplies may be preferable to dropping ore; choose based on your Smithing plan.

  5. Levels70–85

Adamantite or a dependable lower-tier route

Adamantite unlocks at 70, but waiting for rocks can slow progress. Avoid taking expensive equipment to dangerous locations without a plan.

  6. Levels85–99

Runite for value; faster rocks for training

Runite unlocks at 85 and gives 125 base XP per ore. Its scarcity makes it a supply/value route rather than a guaranteed fastest route.

Field notes

  • A pickaxe may require a separate Attack level to wield; you can still carry a usable pickaxe in your inventory.
  • Shooting stars provide a change of pace when announced, but their availability is not a permanent training guarantee.
  • Coal demand rises sharply for better bars: plan your ore and coal together.
